Tricks of the Trade

Sunday Mirror (London, England)

By Adrienne Wild

TRICKS OF THE TRADE: I want to grow totally organic.

Q. I would like to go completely organic. What do you suggest? - Kate Davis, Wrexham, North Wales.

A. ADRIENNE SAYS: Select pest and disease resistant varieties and learn about companion planting. For example all alliums - ornamental varieties, garlic, onions and chives - are said to benefit roses, protecting them against black spot. Borage is an excellent provider of potassium, calcium and other natural minerals. Lupins increase soil nitrogen and encourage earthworms that in turn help improve drainage and aeration. Lovage planted here and there will help improve the health and flavor of other plants.
